Where Is The Solar System Located In Our Galaxy
Camila Farah
Our sun sol is just one of more than a couple hundred billion stars that make up our home galaxy.
As a result this is where most new stars are being born. It s the disk where most of the galaxy s gas and dust is located. The solar system lies about 30 000 light years from the galactic center and about 20 light years above the plane of the galaxy. The milky way galaxy is organized into spiral arms of giant stars that illuminate interstellar gas and dust.
About 4 6 billion years ago way after the big bang happened and started to create gases and stars the solar system began to form. Our home lies within the disk of the milky way. Almost everything that we can see in the sky belongs to the milky way galaxy. Overlaid is a graphic of galactic longitude in relation to our sun.
Our solar system belongs in the milky way galaxy but it will probably change in the future with the collision of the andromeda our closest next galaxy. The milky way galaxy contains roughly 200 billion stars. Graphic view of our milky way galaxy. Earth and its neighbors don t orbit within the plane of the galaxy. The sun is in a finger called the orion spur. Most of these stars are not visible from earth. Our solar system is located in the outer reaches of the milky way galaxy which is a spiral galaxy.
The solar system is located in the orion arm 26 000 light years from the center of the milky way galaxy. The planets today shows you where the planets are now as a live display a free online orrery.
