It is located in the pelvic cavity near the small intestine and the reproductive organs. The triangle shaped base of the bladder known as the trigone helps prevent stretching of the urethra or backflow into the ureters. In females the bladder is positioned under the uterus in front of the vagina and behind the pubic symphysis. In young children the bladder is always located in the abdomen even when it is empty.
It is a small pouch like empty organ that is used for the storage of urine. In males the urethra carries both urine and sperm while the female urethra plays no part in the reproductive system. In gross anatomy the bladder can be divided into a broad fundus a body an apex and a neck. It serves as a reservoir for urine and can stretch considerably to store close to a maximum of 500 milliliters of urine.
