The word of god refers us to a mountain and this mountain is called by two different names mount horeb or mount sinai.
Mount horeb is called the mountain of god exodus 3 1 12. God refers to his mountain by two different names the same way that a twenty four hour day is referred to as the day. In the other books of the pentateuch sinai is the usual name though horeb also occurs exodus 3 1. Exodus 17 6 describes the incident when the israelites were in the wilderness without water.
In 17 passages the same desert and mountain are called horeb or the waste this term is chiefly used in deuteronomy though sinai also occurs deuteronomy 33 2. The name horeb first occurs at exodus 3 1 with the story of moses and the burning bush according to exodus 3 5 the ground of the mountain was considered holy and moses was commanded by god to remove his sandals. To this day several sites have been proposed but no one site has been confirmed by archaeology as the place where god met with moses. The problem is that the location of this sacred place is shrouded in mystery and no one knows its true location and it remains one of many biblical mysteries.
Horeb is located near mount sinai. Exodus 33 6 applying both to the mount of god and to the desert of rephidim some 20 miles to the northwest. For centuries scholars explorers and pilgrims have sought the location of the real mount sinai the mountain where god gave the law to moses and the people of israel.
