They lie in an extracellular matrix.
The connective tissues include several types of fibrous tissue that vary only in their density and cellularity as well as the more specialized and recognizable variants bone ligaments tendons cartilage and adipose fat tissue. Moreover they provide physical support and structure to the body. Connective tissue is the most abundant widely distributed and varied type. Bones are also a form of connective tissue that forms the structure of the body.
The cells of connective tissue are not attached to one other. It includes fibrous tissues fat cartilage bone bone marrow and blood. Another type of connective tissue is dense or fibrous connective tissue which can be found in tendons and ligaments. Also they are widely spaced cells and their matrix is concentric in onion like layers.
Regular fibrous connective tissue shown in the figure below is found in tendons which connect muscles to bones and ligaments which connect bones to bones. Connective tissue is found in between other tissues everywhere in the body including the nervous system. They provide shape support and movement to the body. Adipose tissue is also found in the blubber of whales and elephants hump of camel fat bodies of frog and yellow bone marrow.

In the central nervous system the three outer membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord are composed of connective tissue. These structures help attach muscles to bones and link bones together at joints. The connective tissues are composed of various types of cells and the extracellular matrix. Muscle and nervous tissue run through them.
Fibers ground substance and. Dense connective tissue is composed of large amounts of closely packed collagenous fibers. Irregularly arranged fibrous connective tissues are found in areas of the body where stress occurs from all directions such as the dermis of the skin.
