In the old testament fasting was symbolic of grieving or repenting of sin.
In the new testament era we live in fasting is a way to grow closer. For new testament believers fasting was neither commanded nor forbidden in the bible. Fasting is not an end unto itself but a means of focusing our minds and bodies for a spiritual reason. Fasting is often accompanied by prayer in the bible.
While early christians were not required to fast many practiced prayer and fasting regularly. Jesus himself affirmed in luke 5 35 that after his death fasting would be appropriate for his followers. However a tradition of partial fasting on wednesdays and especially on fridays dates back to the early days of christianity. Here are ten primary purposes for fasting mentioned in scripture.
