The mass of a tree is primarily carbon.

The first incarnation of the christmas tree as we now know it occurred in 16th century germany where it was used to celebrate a 24 december holiday called the feast of adam and eve. Obviously it comes from the air and the earth. As previously mentioned light is essential for plant growth. It turns out that the main ingredients for plant growth are water air and energy.

Where does a plant s mass come from. Other minerals come from the soil too. Christmas gifts under a tree. Perhaps then the matter comes from the soil.

The carbon comes from carbon dioxide used during photosynthesis. The mass of the tree is mainly due to carbon and oxygen. Have you ever wondered where plants get their mass. This fact was not confirmed until 1940 when martin kamen discovered carbon 14 which could be used to trace the carbon in carbon dioxide through photosynthesis.

The story of air the molecule carbon dioxide is made of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. To put that in simpler terms all plants use the energy in sunlight to convert air into plants. The mass of the tree comes from the wood cellulose and cellulose by weight is carbon. All those leaves and branches have to come from somewhere but where.

So where does the mass come from. So the short answer is that the tree develops its mass trunk limbs leaves etc like the rest of us do by using nutrients water and energy to first maintain its existing mass and then using some of the extra to add new mass growth. Wood also stores some of the tree s energy that is why it burns. If that were the right answer then trees should be surrounded by massive holes without soil since the matter has to come from somewhere.

Carbon from air in form of co2 nitrogen from the soil in form of nitrite and oxygen from both water and co2 co2 and water makes glucose and o2 o2 is released but a glucose have 12 oxygen atoms too.

Therefore the sun cannot provide the necessary mass. Ironically some people now object to the public display of christmas trees because of the christian symbolism they have relatively recently come to represent. Upvote 0 downvote. Where plants get their mass.

Vote for this answer. A small amount of trace elements come from the soil through the roots but almost all of the mass comes from the air. The best answer is carbon dioxide.
