Where Are We In The Milky Way Galaxy
Olivia Luz
Nature video we know that the earth and the solar system are located in the.
Graphic view of our milky way galaxy. The milky way galaxy is organized into spiral arms of giant stars that illuminate interstellar gas and dust. If you imagined it as a disk with spiral arms emanating from the center our sun is about a third of the way from the center to the visible. The solar system is located in a region in between the two arms called the orion cygnus arm.
The central bar of the milky way looks like the bar in the spiral galaxy m95. This arm measures 3 500 light years across and is 10 000 light years in length where it breaks off from. Features on one side of a galaxy are often repeated on the other side. If we put all this data together then we get a map like this one below.
There is not much data available about the far side of the galaxy but spiral galaxies are usually fairly symmetrical. The sun is in a finger called the orion spur. A new study in nature finds that the milky way is part of a broader supercluster of 100 000 galaxies known as laniakea.
