The greek word translated blessed means happy blissful or literally to be enlarged.
It forms the beginning of what has come to be known as the sermon on the mount which is recorded in matthew 5 7. Their lifestyle and quality of character is different than those who are still outside of god s kingdom. The beatitudes are the declarations of blessedness upon christians in christ s opening sentences in his sermon on the mount cp mt 5 1 11. Each one starts with blessed are the beatitudes describe disciples who are in the kingdom of god.
Before we jump into the beatitudes i want to point out that we can also find jesus teaching the beatitudes in luke s gospel. The beatitudes are eight blessings recounted by jesus in the sermon on the mount in the gospel of matthew each is a proverb like proclamation without narrative four of the blessings also appear in the sermon on the plain in the gospel of luke followed by four woes which mirror the blessings. The word beatitudes is not in scripture but what it defines is. These are the beatitudes they define the characteristics of christians as expressed by christ.
Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted. In matthew s gospel the beatitudes were given while jesus was on or in the mountain with his disciples. In contrast to the 10 commandments given to moses jesus gives the beatitudes in a positive spirit listing the values in life which will lead to prosperity and salvation. Some speak of seven nine or ten beatitudes but the number appears to be eight verses 10 12 of matthew 5 being one beatitude.

The preaching of this sermon may have come a little later in the chronology of the life of christ. It is debated as to exactly how many beatitudes there are. We know this teaching as the sermon on the mount. Through these 8 beatitudes jesus teaches of virtues and values in life that will result in blessings and rewards.
