In 1633 the oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering death and resurrection of christ every tenth year in so far as no one was to die of the plague anymore.
In return they pledged to re enact the life and suffering of jesus every 10 years. Not another life was lost to the plague. Since its first production it has been performed on open air stages in the village. Now 90 years later the 42 nd edition of the passion play scheduled from may to october 2020 has been postponed due to the covid 19 pandemic.
