Our solar system consists of our star the sun and everything bound to it by gravity the planets mercury venus earth mars jupiter saturn uranus and neptune dwarf planets such as pluto dozens of moons and millions of asteroids comets and meteoroids.
The milky way galaxy contains roughly 200 billion stars. The milky way is a spiral galaxy comprised of a bar shaped core region surrounded by a flat disk of gas dust and stars about 120 000 light years wide. One orbit of the earth takes one year. A hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars that cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye the term milky way is a translation of the latin via lactea from the greek γαλαξίας κύκλος galaxías kýklos milky circle.
The planets in our solar system orbit around the sun. This arm measures 3 500 light years across and is 10 000 light years in length where it breaks off from. Our solar system is made up of a star the sun eight planets 146 moons a bunch of comets asteroids and space rocks ice and several dwarf planets such as pluto. Our solar system is located in the outer reaches of the milky way galaxy which is a spiral galaxy.
The milky way galaxy is organized into spiral arms of giant stars that illuminate interstellar gas and dust. The sun is in a finger called the orion spur. Overlaid is a graphic of galactic longitude in relation to our sun. Our solar system is located about 27 000.
